Mahle M40: Mahle Goes Mid Drive

Mahle expands beyond its well-known hub motors with the launch of the M40 — a compact yet powerful mid-drive delivering up to 105Nm torque and 850W peak output.

Hub motor systems from Mahle could be found on hundreds of bikes at the Eurobike show. This year there was a new addition to its line-up: The M40 is the company’s first full-power mid-drive motor. “Thanks to state-of-the-art technologies, precision engineering and intelligent connectivity, the M40 sets new standards in the category of full-power mid-motors,” said Jochen Sommer, managing director of Mahle SmartBike Systems.

It may be a full-power unit but it’s still extremely compact, weighing just 2.5kg; with the smaller 534Wh iM5 battery, the M40 system weighs close to 5kg. A larger 800Wh iM8 motor gives a range up to 150km. The new system has plenty of punch, with a maximum torque of 105Nm and a peak power of 850W, and one of the best power-to-weight ratios on the market.

The M40 was developed especially for eMTBs and trekking bikes. It’ll assist you up to 400 percent of your leg power when you’re tackling steep or difficult terrain and it’s designed to offer a powerful, natural riding experience. The compact size, low weight and powerful output will also make it ideal for high-performance urban bikes. A new Head Unit+ display and Trio remote control launch with the motor, and the M40 is compatible with Mahle’s existing displays and remote switches.

The M40 drive system is available now, and Mahle will be extending its M series over the coming years. New drives will launch to complement the extremely successful X series, which currently consists of the X20, X30 and XS hub drives.
